10 Tips for Buying Hand Stamped Personalized Jewelry

Posted March 29, 2012

Shopping for personalized, hand-stamped, engraved, or etched jewelry can be a lot of fun.  But there are a few things you should be aware of before you make your purchase.  Before you put your trust in someone to create your very special and unique piece of jewelry, make sure you have asked the following questions:

  1. Is the company well established?  Have they been in business for a while, and will they be there for you in the future if you want to add to your jewelry or ever have a problem with it?  Dealing only with established businesses also increases the chances that their product and service is of higher quality.  Otherwise they wouldn’t be able to survive very long.
  2. Can you contact them if you need to?  Does the company have an About Page and an easy way to contact them?  If a company does not tell you about themselves or makes it hard to contact them, there must be a reason.  Shopping with someone you can talk to will ensure you get what you want, and that they will stand behind their product.
  3. What kind of products do they have, and can you customize them?  Can you add a charm or stone or chain to a necklace?  Can you get charms personalized on the back as well as the front?  Are they willing to work with you to customize something without charging you an arm and a leg?  This is a personal and unique piece of jewelry, so make sure you get what you envision.
  4. How creative can you get with your customization?  Do they carry lots of unique symbols to your name charms and pendants?  Can you truly create something that is unique to you?
  5. Are the products high quality?  Have they been doing this for a while, or are they learning on your piece?  Do they use high quality metals in their designs?  Metals like gold, gold-filled, copper, sterling silver and fine silver are all optimal choices for creating jewelry and will withstand to a lot of abuse.  Keep in mind that pewter has lead in it so that is a metal to steer clear of for jewelry.
  6. What is their return policy?  Do they care if you are unhappy with what you get?  Will they fix mistakes immediately?  Do they realize that YOU are the most important part of their entire business?
  7. What do others think?  Can you find their Facebook page, product reviews, and testimonials?  Do you see negative comments from customers or questions that go unanswered?  Do they answer in a timely manner?  It can very clear how a company treats their customers when you see how they treat questions and possible issues that have come up.
  8. How much do they charge for shipping?  Don’t be fooled by low product prices with high shipping costs.
  9. What chain options do they have?  Can you select a chain that fits your style?  Or are there only one or two choices?
  10. Are they safe to do business with?  Is their site secure and are they accredited with the Better Business Bureau?

Most of all, do you get the feeling that the company cares about you?  Browse their site for signs that they care about their customers, that they will treat you well and that you can trust them.

How to choose the chain style that best fits you!

Posted March 23, 2012

Heart on Your Wrist offers a range of gold-filled and silver chains that you can mix and match with different name tags and mom charms to create a look all your own.  Generally speaking, the chain you choose can reflect a certain mood or style, based on the look, size and luster of its links.

Ball Chain

Ball ChainThe Ball Chain is distinguished by 2mm wide spheres, or solid balls, rather than open links.  Available in sterling silver, this style is traditionally used for military dog tags, but looks great with charms of all sorts or very large pendants.  This chain channels a bit of military style that is casual and modern.

Fine Ball Chain

Fine Ball Chain Gold Fine Ball ChainSimilar to the Ball Chain only smaller in scale, the Fine Ball Chain is available in gold filled and sterling silver, and have spheres measuring 1.5mm.  These strike a trendy and casual look.

Snake Chain

Snake ChainSnake Chain, also known as an “S” chain, has a solid look and slinky feel, as the links are close and continuous.  Our Snake Chain is 1mm wide, a good width and style for any of our charms and birthstones.  It is probably our ‘dressiest’ chain.

Dainty Cable

Box Chain

Sterling Box ChainThe Box Chain is similar to the Snake Chain in that it has a steady stream of continuous links, but the links are box-shaped rather than S-shaped.  This is a chain that produces a little bit of shine and is one of our most popular chain types.  Use this with charms and pendants, or wear on its own for a hint of glitter.

Chain lengths – which to choose when buying personalized jewelry?

Posted February 16, 2012

Chain Lengths from Heart On Your WristWhen shopping for hand-stamped jewelry, one of the options you get to decide on is chain length for your necklace. You can of course opt for no chain and put your personalized charms on your own existing chain, but if you’re buying a chain on the internet, it can be difficult to determine what length would look best on you. We here at Heart On Your Wrist get questions all the time about which chain length is best! So when deciding, you should consider a couple things.

1) Are you petite or tall?  Funny question but do you have a thin or thick neck?  Or a regular sized neck?  These answers will all make a difference on how a chain will lay on you.

2) Do you like necklaces high up on your neck or lower down over a shirt, or somewhere in between?

Just thinking about these two simple questions will help you determine the best chain length for you.   For example, if you have a thin neck and are tall, and you like to wear your necklaces long, I would go with a 20″ or 24″ chain.  If you have a thicker neck but like to wear necklaces closer to your face, I would go with an 18″ chain (or 16″ if you have a regular sized neck).

If you are still unsure. take a piece of string and put it on you like it’s a necklace and place it just where you’d want it.  Then measure the string.  This will tell you what length you like!  Take a look at our “model” here – she represents a regular sized neck – hopefully this photo will help a bit with your decision as well.  Happy shopping.

Advice for Him – How to choose the perfect Valentine’s Day Gift

Posted January 20, 2012

One of the hardest things for most men to do is pick out a piece of jewelry for a wife, girlfriend or mother.  A bracelet, a necklace, a ring—it’s such a personal thing, you think.  What if she absolutely hates it?  Before you get yourself all worked up, read on.

It’s actually very easy to please a woman with a gift of jewelry–that’s right, easy–provided you engage in a little detective work beforehand.  And no, I don’t mean hiring a private eye to follow her around; I mean just taking the time out to notice what she likes and doesn’t like and maybe even ask a few discreet questions.  This is the key to jewelry-buying success.

7  Questions to Ask Before Buying Jewelry for a Woman

1.  Is she a gold or silver person?

Notice what she currently wears.  Most women like one or the other and while most of the time it’s just preference, sometimes it can be a case of being allergic to a certain kind of metal.

2.  Does she prefer a style that is large and chunky or small and dainty?

Although some women will switch it up occasionally depending on their mood or what they’re wearing, most tend to go with either a bold look or a more classic one.

3.  Is she formal or casual?

Again, although there are exceptions, most women have either a casual sensibility or a dressier one.  Does she spend a lot of time doing her make-up in the morning or is she the kind to just wash her face and go?  You wouldn’t want to buy a dressy piece for someone who never dresses up, or vice versa.

4. Does she love hearts, circles or rectangles?

Hearts, circles, rectangles–believe it or not, most women have a preference.  You might be able to ascertain this by looking at the jewelry she currently wears.  If not, you can ask her in a subtle way if she prefers one shape over another.

5.  What does she wear most?

This is not just a question about casual versus dressy; it’s about necklines, fabrics, dresses versus jeans, blouses versus tops and overhead sweaters versus cardigans.  Knowing this can help you determine not just style, but such things as length of the chain on a necklace or the width of a bracelet.

6.  What is practical for her and her lifestyle?

Is she a working woman or a stay-at-home mom?  Does she work in an office or in a fast food restaurant?  There are always practical considerations to buying jewelry.  For example, you wouldn’t want to necessarily buy an opera length necklace for a woman who has a toddler or a skeleton necklace for a woman who works in a conservative business environment like a bank or big corporation.

7.  Has she ever said she really liked a piece of jewelry someone else was wearing?

Here’s a biggie.  Whether conscientiously or sub-conscientiously, women give clues all the time as to what they like and don’t like.  All you have to do is listen and pay close attention.  This, more than anything else, will help you choose a piece of jewelry–be it a necklace, ring or bracelet–that she’ll really love and cherish.

Once you are armed with this information, you should feel more comfortable steering yourself in the right direction of what to choose.  If you are still unsure though, we here at Heart On Your Wrist can help!  If you know some of the answers to the questions above, we can help you select the perfect handmade piece of jewelry made especially for her.  Just give us a call or send us an email!

Deployed Single Moms Get Support

Posted November 18, 2011

I recently had the pleasure of working with Carey, a representative for a non profit organization called Operation GI Jane. It’s a charitable group dedicated to assisting deployed single mothers in the military, in connecting with and supporting their children while they are deployed.  It is a wonderful group – I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to be a deployed single mom.  Their dedication to their jobs and their country are truly inspiring.  I was happy to donate a military style necklace to their recent auction to show our support.  It is inspiring to work with people whose main goal is helping others.  And the people that this group supports are the very people that dedicate their lives and time to our country, which allows us all to enjoy our lives as Americans.
